Depth of field is seriously the most important thing to learn if you want to improve your photos, in my opinion. Most point-and-shoot cameras (as well as cell phones) have a ridiculously deep DoF, so it just looks cheap when everything is in focus at once.

I took this one last week with my LG/Google Nexus 5 at Costco.
Yes, to all that you’ve said. I think most of the newer potato cameras can be forced to shorten the DOF, but you have to understand what you’re trying to do, as you said.
